Solar Screens vs. Window Tinting
What's the difference?
Are you looking for ways to reduce the sun’s heat and glare from coming into your home? If so, you may have narrowed it down to having your windows tinted or adding exterior sun screens. Although there are similarities in the two methods, there are also distinct differences that help you decide which is right for you.
Similarities
Both sunscreens and window film help you accomplish many of the same things
- Keep your home cooler
- Block harmful UV rays
- Protect your belongings from sun damage
- Provide a clear view of the outdoors from the inside
- DIY not recommended
Differences
Solar Screens
- Solar screens mount on the exterior of your home, outside the window, much like regular screens and do not damage the window or affect the warranty.
- Solar screens stop the sun's heat before it gets to your window, reducing heat transfer to keep the interior cooler.
- Solar screens can be removed, which can be beneficial if you want to take advantage of the sun’s heat during the cool winter months or if they need to be cleaned.
Window Tinting
- Window film is applied directly to the inside of window. This can compromise the quality of the window and cause permanent damage. In most cases, this voids the window manufacturer’s warranty.
- Window tint exposes your windows to the full force of the sun’s heat, which allows your house to get warmer.
- Window film is permanent. If applied incorrectly, it can crack, bubble and peel, detracting from your beautiful windows.
